Am I eligible for a security key?

The security key is for clients who only use the e.dentifier for Internet Banking. If this applies to you, you will receive a personal invitation from us between May 2026 and December 2026. Until then, you can continue using the e.dentifier as you normally do.

How does the security key work?

What is a security key?

A security key is a personal USB security key that allows you to log in to Internet Banking securely without a smart phone.

When do I use the security key?

You use the security key if you cannot or do not want to do your banking through the ABN AMRO app.

How do I register my security key?

After you receive your security key, you must follow the steps in the manual or online registration page. You link the key to your personal details with a PIN. You can find more information about registering your security key here.

Which PIN should I use for the security key?

You’ll be asked to choose a PIN with at least 4 digits during the registration process. You then use this PIN together with the security key to log in to Internet Banking and confirm orders.

Can I share my security key, for example with my partner?

The security key is personal and cannot be shared. Each account holder needs their own security key to log in securely and to confirm actions in Internet Banking.

Which type of USB connector do I need?

New devices mainly have USB C, older devices have USB A. You’ll get an adapter so you can use both types.

How do I change the email address linked to my security key?

In Internet Banking, go to Profile at the top right of your screen. Under Security, click Change your email address for your profile.

The next time you log in with the security key, enter your new email address.

Which browser does the security key work with?

Can I use the security key on more than one device?

Yes. You can use the security key on several different devices, such as your laptop, desktop or mobile phone. The device and browser must support the security standards that work with the security key.

Tip: make sure that your browser is always up-to-date. The security key may not work with older browsers or devices.

Ordering a security key

Who can request a security key?

The security key is for clients who only use the e.dentifier for Internet Banking.
If this applies to you, you will automatically receive a personal letter or message in Internet Banking between now and late 2026, inviting you to order a security key.
You cannot request a security key without this invitation.

How do I request a security key?

You can request a security key as soon as you receive your personal invitation. The invitation includes a link to the order form. Click the link and follow the instructions to order your security key.

What does a security key cost?

The first key costs €10. Extra or replacement keys cost €25 each.

If you can’t afford to pay for a security key, we’ll look for a suitable solution together with you in exceptional situations.

What if I can’t afford a security key?

In exceptional situations, the costs can be problematic for clients who only use Internet Banking and don’t have another way to log in. In such situations, we’ll look for a suitable solution together with the client. Please call our Contact Centre on 0900 0024 (usual call charges apply).

Why do I have to pay for a security key?

A security key is not an ABN AMRO device, whereas the e.dentifier was. It is an international standard security device (FIDO key), which you would normally buy from a web store or electronics shop.

ABN AMRO does not make any money from the security key.
We are temporarily offering them at the lowest price possible, because certain clients will no longer be able to access Internet Banking with an e.dentifier after the end of 2026.

So until the end of 2026, clients who only use Internet Banking and still use an e.dentifier to log in, will be able to order a security key through ABN AMRO.
This will ensure that everyone can continue to log in securely, even when the e.dentifier is phased out.

Can I order an extra security key?

Yes, you can use the same link to place an order for an extra key. You can order a maximum of one key at a time.

I still haven't received my security key. What should I do?

You security key will usually be delivered within 5 working days. If you haven’t received your key after this period, please call our Contact Centre on 0900 0024 (usual call charges apply).

How secure is the security key?

The key is very secure and only works with your personal PIN. The key itself does not store personal information.

What happens if someone else gets their hands on my security key?

Without your PIN code, no one can use the security key. However, it is still important to remove your security key yourself or report it as lost immediately so we can block the key.

Is it safe to attach the security key to a key cord?

A key cord is optional. Some clients find it practical, others prefer the key to be less visible.

How do I know that my security key is secure and hasn’t been opened?

The packaging is sealed with a seal strip so you can check that it hasn’t been tampered with.

Solving problems with the security key

My computer doesn’t recognise the security key. What should I do?

Check the USB port, update your browser and perhaps try another device.

I’ve forgotten my PIN. What should I do?

If you forget your PIN, you can request a new one on the PIN reset page.

If the box is damaged, does this mean that my security key has been hacked?

No, damage to the packaging does not mean that the security key has been hacked. The key is not linked to you or your personal details until you register it during the set-up process. Nobody can use your security key until it’s been registered.

How do I change the email address linked to my security key?

Do I have a warranty on the security key if it doesn’t work?

Is your security key not working and did it break within 60 days of ordering? Then you can request a new security key free of charge. If your security key broke outside the warranty period, you can order a new one at your own expense.

Loss, theft and defects

What should I do if I lose my security key or if it’s stolen?

Don’t worry: nobody can use your security key without your personal PIN. However, it’s still important to block your security key immediately, so that it is no longer usable.

There are two ways of doing this:
1. Via the page: lost your security key?
2. By calling our Contact Centre on 0900 0024 (usual call charges apply).

We will block the security key immediately and help you to request a replacement.

Can I return my security key?

Yes, you can return the security key within 14 days, in line with your right of withdrawal.
