More information and product conditions

Who is it for?
  • You are aged 18 or over
  • You have a current account on which salary has been received over the last three months.

You cannot apply for Rood Staan if you are 62, 63, 64, 65 or 66 years old. This is because we do not know whether you will keep the same income just before you retire. If you apply for Rood Staan, you must have a stable income.
What is Rood Staan?
Rood Staan allows you to use the overdraft facility on your current account. It is a revolving credit. This means that you can always be overdrawn up to an agreed amount (your credit limit). You will only pay interest if you are overdrawn.

You agree a limit with us, which will be between €500 and €5,000 and will never exceed your net income. We will calculate whether you can use this income to repay your overdraft, meaning your overdraft limit may be less than you had hoped.

The amount you are allowed to be overdrawn is determined by your lowest income over the past three months. Housing benefit, healthcare benefit and personal transfers do not count towards your limit.

If you want to borrow more than your net income, explore whether a personal loan is the right option for you. Please note that the conditions and the interest rates for these products differ.

In order to use the overdraft facility quickly and easily, we use an automated decision process for applications. For more information about your rights when we use automated decision-making, read our Privacy Statement, which you can find under Privacy and Cookies.
How to make repayments
Since your salary is credited to the current account each month, you will repay your overdraft automatically. However, you must have a positive balance for at least one working day every 90 days. You will only pay interest if you are overdrawn.

From the age of 70, we will lower your limit each month by the same amount. This will happen over a period of ten years. This means that by the age of 80, you can still have an overdraft of up to €1,000. This does not apply if your limit is already lower than €1,000.
The interest may change

The interest you pay is variable. This means that it may change at any time. Find out how we determine the interest amount here. Important information:

  • You will be notified when the interest rate changes.
  • If the interest rate increases, your monthly amount will remain the same. The total cost of your loan will increase, meaning it will take you longer to repay the loan.
  • If the interest rate decreases, your monthly amount will remain the same. The total cost of your loan will decrease.
  • If you are not overdrawn, you will not pay any interest.
