Rood Staan (overdraft)

Convenient when money is tight

  • Convenient temporary solution when money is tight
  • Go overdrawn up to your net income
  • Pay interest only when you are overdrawn

Apply online

If money is tight, Rood Staan will allow you to temporarily draw more money than there is in your account, up to a limit that equals your net monthly income. And when you are not overdrawn, you will not pay interest either. Rood Staan is easy to apply for online. You can do this on Internet Banking or in the ABN AMRO app. The application form is currently only available in Dutch.

Apply for Rood Staan

  • You can only go overdrawn on the ABN AMRO current account into which a salary, benefit or pension was paid over the past three months.
  • Go overdrawn between €500 and €5,000, but never more than your net monthly income. If you are aged 75 years or older, you can go up to €1,000 overdrawn.
  • There is generally no need to submit any documents. We will get the information we need by looking at your current account.
  • Your overdraft limit will be set based on the lowest income received over the past three months. While income such as housing and healthcare allowances will be included in the assessment of whether or not you qualify for an overdraft, it will not be taken into consideration in setting your overdraft limit.

Important information

  • You must have a credit balance in your account for at least one working day every three months, meaning that you can only go overdrawn for a short period.
  • Since going overdrawn is a form of borrowing, we are required by law to check your credit history with the Dutch Credit Registration Office (BKR) and ask you a few questions about your personal and financial situation. This includes looking at your income and your expenses.
  • By applying for an overdraft, you are consenting to ABN AMRO checking your details and using them in the automatic processing of your application.
  • With an overdraft, you are effectively borrowing money without getting advice first.

Who is it for?
  • You need a little extra financial breathing room for the time being, because you’re not quite managing to make ends meet, for instance, or if you’ve unexpectedly got to make a large purchase.
  • You’re aged 18 years or older.
  • You live in the Netherlands and have long-term residency rights.
  • You have a current account into which your salary has been paid over the last 3 months.
Good to know
If you’re aged between 62 and 66 years old, you can apply for a Rood Staan overdraft of up to 75% of your net income. This is our way of taking your upcoming retirement into account.
What is Rood Staan?
Rood Staan allows you to use the overdraft facility on your current account. It is a revolving credit. This means that you can always be overdrawn up to an agreed amount (your credit limit). You will only pay interest if you are overdrawn.

You agree a limit with us, which will be between €500 and €5,000 and will never exceed your net income. We will calculate whether you can use this income to repay your overdraft, meaning your overdraft limit may be less than you had hoped.

The amount you are allowed to be overdrawn is determined by your lowest income over the past three months. Housing benefit, healthcare benefit and personal transfers do not count towards your limit.

If you want to borrow more than your net income, explore whether a personal loan is the right option for you. Please note that the conditions and the interest rates for these products differ.

In order to use the overdraft facility quickly and easily, we use an automated decision process for applications. For more information about your rights when we use automated decision-making, read our Privacy Statement, which you can find under Privacy and Cookies.
How to make repayments
Since your salary is credited to the current account each month, you will repay your overdraft automatically. However, you must have a positive balance for at least one working day every 90 days. You will only pay interest if you are overdrawn.

From the age of 70, we will lower your limit each month by the same amount. This will happen over a period of ten years. This means that by the age of 80, you can still have an overdraft of up to €1,000. This does not apply if your limit is already lower than €1,000.
The interest may change

The interest you pay is variable. This means that it may change at any time. Find out how we determine the interest amount here. Important information:

  • You will be notified when the interest rate changes.
  • If the interest rate increases, your monthly amount will remain the same. The total cost of your loan will increase, meaning it will take you longer to repay the loan.
  • If the interest rate decreases, your monthly amount will remain the same. The total cost of your loan will decrease.
  • If you are not overdrawn, you will not pay any interest.

The figures in this table are for illustrative purposes only. How much you will pay in interest depends on your personal and financial situation. The debit interest rate is the rate of interest charged on the overdraft. This is the interest on an annual basis. The interest rate is variable, which means that it may go up or down during the term. The APRC* (annual percentage rate of charge) brings together all charges for the overdraft facility, such as the interest rate and fees for your current account, for example. These, too, may vary from person to person.
