Despite geopolitical unrest, the outlook for economic growth and corporate earnings remains positive. Investors would do well to see through the current ‘fog’. There is ample reason to enter the second half of this investment year with cautious optimism.

New attacks between Iran and the US have again caused geopolitical uncertainty just as the highly anticipated second-quarter earnings season has taken off. Investors will want to weigh a combination of macroeconomic factors, corporate earnings and questions about the sustainability of AI investments. We expect that this could lead to some volatility over the summer. Against this backdrop, we believe that neutral positions in equities and bonds provide the best entry for the summer while continuing to hold gold as it provides additional diversification benefits. Within the bond portfolio, we are increasing our overweight position in investment-grade corporate bonds.

Semiconductor stocks have come under pressure in recent weeks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX), a widely followed index of semiconductor companies, has fallen by more than 20% from its recent peak. As a result, the index has entered bear market territory. Several well-known names have also seen substantial declines. Nvidia and AMD have declined by around 15%, while Intel and Micron Technology have fallen by more than 30%.
