Excess

You will only have to pay an excess in the event of:

  • Damage from rainfall or overflowing water, such as a leaking water pipe: €220

  • Storm damage: €220 for tenant's or owner's fixtures and fittings. For example, if you rent your house or if you have your own flat. You will have an excess in the event of damage to any improvements you have made to your home. These are improvements that you cannot take with you when you move house

If you select all-risk cover when applying for the policy, you will have an excess of €100 for specific all-risk claims. This excess also applies to the additional all-risk cover for mobile devices and personal possessions.

In addition, you can select a voluntary excess of €100, €250 or €500. This additional excess applies per incident. You will receive a discount on your premium, but you will also receive less compensation in the event of a claim. If you apply for home contents insurance online, you will not receive an offer for a voluntary excess. However, you can select this after the application process is complete. You will receive more information on this.

Underinsurance guarantee

In the Netherlands, your belongings in your home are insured by a guarantee against underinsurance. It does not matter what the value of your home contents is at the time of the damage. For some incidents, different amounts apply:

  • Theft or vandalism of art, collections of rare items and antiques: up to €35,000
  • Theft of jewellery and watches: up to €7,500
  • Mobile devices up to €7,500

A maximum insured amount of €150,000 per case or collection always applies. Check the policy and terms and conditions to see which maximum amounts apply for specific items and events.

Additional theft cover for valuable home contents

Do you have valuable household effects? From 1 March 2023 you can take out additional theft cover by telephone. Then these insured amounts apply:

  • Theft or vandalism of art, antiques and collections: insured up to €75,000
  • Theft of jewelery and watches: insured up to €10,000
Additional costs that will be reimbursed

If your damage is covered, other costs will be reimbursed as well, such as reasonable expert fees and costs you incur in order to reduce or prevent imminent damage. To find out which costs are covered, please call us in advance. View the terms and conditions for the scope of cover and exclusions.

Want to find out how much you will be paid in the event of a claim? The depreciation list (only in Dutch) shows you the average lifespan of each product and the depreciation rate per year.

All-risk cover also insures all damage caused by other sudden and unexpected events – even if they arise due to your own fault. You might accidentally knock over your television, for example. With all-risk cover, you will have an excess of €100 for all-risk claims. Some damage is never insured, such as damage caused intentionally. The terms and conditions  specify what is and is not covered.

Please note that you can only select additional personal possessions cover and glass cover if you have an all-risk policy.

During the online application process

During the online application process, you select either basic or all-risk cover. After your application, you can always change your home insurance policies (e.g. from basic to all-risk cover) or expand it (e.g. with personal possessions cover). If you apply for your home contents insurance in addition to your home insurance, the same cover applies to both: basic or all-risk.

Additional cover

When you apply for your home contents insurance, you can select additional cover:

Mobile devices cover (basic and all-risk)

Mobile devices cover gives your mobile phone, tablet, laptop and smartwatch all-risk insurance against dropping, knocking or theft of your phone in the Netherlands. Please note that if you select the all-risk home contents insurance, you will only have basic cover in the home for mobile devices as standard. This means you are insured against damage caused by fire or burglary, for example. However, you are not covered for things like falls and knocks. If you want to insure your mobile devices with all-risk cover as well, you need to select additional mobile devices cover. You will have an excess of €100 per incident for all-risk claims relating to your mobile devices.

Personal possessions cover (all-risk only)

Want to have proper insurance for your musical instruments, jewellery, watches and sports equipment (such as your golf set or kiteboard) outside of your home in the Netherlands? Special glass types such as stained glass or processed glass is covered up to a value of €1,000. If you only have glass damage, no excess applies. If you select all-risk cover when requesting the policy, you will have an excess of €100 for all-risk claims. This excess also applies to all-risk claims under additional cover.
