Before you start investing

Investing involves risks. You may lose (part of) your investment. If you are going to invest, it is important that you are aware of this.

  • Only invest if you know what you are doing. Know the risks and do not be swayed by the issues of the day.
  • Invest with money you can spare. Keep a financial buffer for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Also think of an extra buffer for difficult economic times.
  • Think about your investment horizon (how long you want to invest) and adjust your risk accordingly.
  • Spread out your investments. Don't just invest in one specific share or shares from one sector or country. Use managed funds, for example.
  • Spread your investments over a certain period of time; "timing" the market hardly ever works.

Costs

This is what you pay us

You pay us service costs and transaction costs. Service costs are costs for the administration of your investment portfolio and the information we provide about it. You pay transaction costs when buying and selling your investment products.

This is what you pay to other parties

If you have investment funds in your portfolio, you must take into account the costs that these funds incur. These are management costs and administration costs, for example. We call these the running costs. These are already included in the price of the investment fund. The Essential Investor Information for each fund states the costs.

Sample calculation

To give you a good idea of the annual costs for investing, ABN AMRO uses sample profiles. These sample profiles show you the expected annual costs if you invested the same or approximately the same as the sample profile. We show you different example profiles, and each example profile has its own characteristics.

Choose the sample profile that best fits your investment portfolio and investment behaviour. The annual costs in the example profile are then comparable to the costs that you would incur yourself. This way you can see the expected annual costs for investing before you start investing.

Influence of costs on return

This calculation example shows the influence of all costs on the return on your investment. We use a fixed return of 4% per year for this. Your actual return may therefore be different. This fixed return allows you to properly compare our costs with those of other providers of investment services.

This is not a prediction, but a sample calculation. If the return is higher or lower than in this example, the costs will generally also be higher or lower.

Initial value at the beginning: €10,000 Sale after 1 year Sale after 3 years Sale after 5 years
Outcome based on 4% return per year €10,400 €11,204 €12,069
Costs of our investment services 0.20% per year €21 €65 €112
Cost of all investment products in your portfolio 0.53% per year €55 €172 €297
Total costs €76 €237 €410
Total costs as percentage of the outcome 0.73% 2.11% 3.39%

We have calculated the costs based on the net return per year, i.e. the return minus the costs. You see the total costs expressed as an amount and as a percentage of the results after 1, 3 and 5 years.

Sustainable investing

When investing sustainably, the consequences of the investment play an important role. That is why it is also referred to as socially responsible investing. A sustainable investor wants to contribute to a better world. In addition to the environment, sustainable investors also promote human rights and education, for instance.

Socially responsible investing is an important principle of ABN AMRO. Certain investments are completely excluded for all investment types. Investments in producers of cluster bombs and landmines, for instance.

Would you like to (partly) invest in sustainable investment funds? You can easily see how sustainable the funds you select are in the Fund Selector or filter them based on sustainability.
