Unblocking your debit card
Unblocking your card easily online
You will often be able to unblock your card yourself in the ABN AMRO app or on Internet Banking. You can do so if:
- you blocked the card yourself in the ABN AMRO app or on Internet Banking;
- you have entered the wrong PIN 3 times at an ATM or in a shop.
No ABN AMRO app?
If you don’t use the ABN AMRO app, you can unblock your card on Internet Banking. You will need a different card associated with your current account in order to log in (e.g. the card for a joint account).
If you can’t unblock your card online, please call us.

Have you received a new or replacement debit card?
There's no need for unblocking. Activate a new debit card by phone using the code found in the letter. For a replacement debit card, activate it by making a transaction at a Geldmaat ATM or in a store. Your PIN remains the same.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly can I use my card after unblocking it?
If you unblock your debit card through the app or Internet Banking, you can use it immediately. There's no waiting period. If a staff member unblocks your card, it is also instantly usable. Sometimes, after unblocking via the app or Internet Banking, you may need to check your balance at a Geldmaat ATM to complete the process fully. After that, you can use your debit card right away.
Will I be charged for unblocking my card?
No, blocking or unblocking your card is free of charge.
Why do I need to unblock my card at an ATM instead of using the app or Internet Banking?
In some situations, you can only unblock your debit card at a Geldmaat ATM. For instance, if you enter the wrong PIN several times on the e.dentifier, the chip on your card gets blocked for security reasons. However, the card may not appear as blocked in the app or Internet Banking. Entering the correct PIN at a Geldmaat ATM will lift the chip block, allowing you to use your card immediately.
Are you abroad? You can also unblock your card at another ATM.
How do I unblock my debit card while abroad?
You can also unblock your debit card abroad via Internet Banking or the app. This is possible if you've blocked the card yourself.
If you entered the wrong PIN three times on the e.dentifier, the chip on your debit card will be blocked. In this case, go to an ATM, enter the correct PIN, check your balance, or withdraw money. Your card is now unblocked. You can do this at any ATM abroad.
If you entered the wrong PIN three times while making a payment or withdrawing cash, first unblock your card through the app or Internet Banking. Then, go to an ATM and check your balance or withdraw cash. Your card will be unblocked.
