Help, the ATM has swallowed my card!

Imagine you want to withdraw some cash, but the ATM unexpectedly swallows your debit card. Luckily this does not happen very often, but when it does, it can be very annoying. The card is usually swallowed for one of the following reasons:

  • the system recognises it as a stolen card;
  • fraudulent use of the card is suspected;
  • there is a fault in the ATM.

Once a card has been swallowed, it will not be returned to you.

What to do next

Request a new ABN AMRO debit card right away using the ABN AMRO app or Internet Banking. It only takes a minute and you will receive your new debit card within three working days. Your PIN will also stay the same — good to know!

You do not need to wait next to the ATM, as the card will not be returned to you. It ends up in a special compartment inside the ATM, and cards that end up there are destroyed for security purposes to ensure that they are not misused. It is unfortunately not possible to get your old card back. Request a new debit card using the ABN AMRO app or Internet Banking.

While you are waiting for your new debit card to arrive, you might need to make payments or withdraw cash. You can also do your banking without a debit card in the following ways:

If you have another account with a debit card, you can transfer money using your identification code or the ABN AMRO app.

  • You can also make payments or withdraw cash using a credit card, including when you are abroad. Please note: you will be charged a minimum of €4.50 to withdraw cash using your credit card. Check the rates.
  • You can make an emergency withdrawal at an ABN AMRO branch. Be sure to take valid proof of your identity with you.

If none of the above options are possible, please contact us.

Perhaps you have a second card for your account or a card for a different current account. You can also use a credit card to make payments or withdraw cash almost everywhere. Please note: you will be charged for withdrawing cash with the ABN AMRO Credit Card and ABN AMRO Gold Card. Check the rates. Swallowed debit cards are destroyed for security purposes, so they cannot be misused.
