Setting up recurring payments with your debit card

Handy and secure for paying subscriptions and membership fees

Use your new Mastercard debit card to set up automatic payments. You and the seller decide on the amount and frequency of the payments. This could be useful for subscriptions and membership fees, for example.

Pay securely and on time, without having to think about it. You just set up the automatic payments once using your debit card, and future payments will be made automatically. No need to worry that you’ll suddenly miss out on your favourite TV series!

Difference between a recurring payment and a direct debit

If you set up a direct debit, you are authorising a company to debit money from your account. You may already have direct debits set up for your insurance or monthly energy bills.

Recurring payments are payments made to a physical or online shop or a seller using your debit card. They are repeated on a fixed date to pay for your newspaper, for example, or a streaming service or gym membership. The amount is debited from your account using your debit card.

This is how you set up a recurring payment

  1. Go to the seller or provider’s shop or web page, or open their app.

  2. When taking out the subscription, select ‘Recurring payment’ as the payment method.

  3. If possible, select the frequency of the payment (for example, weekly, monthly or quarterly), enter your card details and select the amount.

  4. Check the data you’ve entered: the frequency, amount and card details.

  5. Some sellers ask you to agree to their General terms and conditions. Read them carefully and agree before continuing.

  6. Confirm the payment. You’ve now set up a recurring payment.

Difference between a recurring payment and a direct debit

A recurring payment is very similar to a direct debit, but there are some differences. If you set up a direct debit, you are authorising a company to debit money regularly from your account to pay for your insurance or monthly energy bills, for example.

Difference between a recurring payment and a standing order

A recurring payment using your debit card is very similar to a standing order, but there are some differences. You set up a standing order yourself in the ABN AMRO app or on Internet Banking, and the payment order repeats itself. It’s a convenient way of paying your rent, saving or giving your child pocket money. So no sellers are involved.
