How a legal expenses insurance works
If you get into a dispute with someone, you may need legal assistance, but this can be very expensive. Legal expenses insurance means you’re assured of good legal help and advice for a fixed monthly premium. You can choose from three covers.

Conflicts where the interest is less than €150 are not covered. The insurance policy also does not cover conflicts relating to the rental of your home or holiday home. This does not apply if you are renting out a room in your own home with a rental contract of at least one year.

Who's it for?
ABN AMRO's legal expenses insurance is for all ABN AMRO private clients who live in the Netherlands. You need an ABN AMRO bank account in order to take out the insurance policy. The premium is debited from that bank account.
Your partner and children are also insured through ABN AMRO's legal expenses insurance. This also applies to children who study full-time and living away from home.
When does the insurance take effect?
You select the effective date of your insurance policy. The insurance policy takes effect after the insurer has accepted your application. From that moment on, you can use the legal expenses insurance in the event of a conflict or when a conflict is imminent. Ongoing or foreseen conflicts are not covered.
You can still cancel the insurance policy within 14 days after taking it out. Return the policy, freepost, to:

The premium of your legal expenses insurance depends on a number of factors, including your family situation. Calculate your premium online in a few simple steps.
Arrangement fees
ABN AMRO Bank N.V. mediates for private clients in non-life insurance products of ABN AMRO Schadeverzekering N.V. We receive a fee of 20% of the premium for providing this mediation. Package discount
You will receive a package discount of up to 3 to 5% if you have three or more insurance policies with ABN AMRO.

I want legal advice in the event of a conflict. What do I need to do?
If you have legal expenses insurance and you think you may be involved in a legal conflict or you need legal assistance, call the ARAG Service Centre on +31 (0)33 - 434 24 70. This number is available on working days between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Outside office hours, ARAG can only be reached for urgent emergencies and you will be connected to the ARAG emergency center.
I have legal expenses insurance but my conflict is not insured. What do I do?
There may be a conflict that is not covered by your selected modules, or that arose before the effective date of the insurance. You can still call ARAG for advice during office hours. ARAG will be happy to help you. The ARAG lawyer or a good legal service provider within ARAG's network will then ensure that you get the correct help at a reduced rate.
ARAG's lawyers will also be happy to help you in the event of an imminent conflict. If, for example, you have a question about your legal position in a specific case, you can call the ARAG's lawyers for advice over the telephone. Call the ARAG Service Centre on +31 (0)33 - 434 24 70. This number is available on working days between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Outside office hours, ARAG can only be reached for urgent emergencies and you will be connected to the ARAG emergency center.
I do not have legal expenses insurance. Can I still get legal assistance?
Even if you have not (yet) taken out legal expenses insurance, you can contact the ARAG's lawyers for legal assistance at a fixed price. This applies to the Work and Income and Divorce mediation modules.
Disagreements in the workplace, criticism of your performance, sickness absence or impending dismissal? ARAG's employment lawyers are happy to help you. ARAG's divorce specialists will help you apply for your divorce, perform a maintenance check or draw up a parenting plan. Need legal help? Got a different legal problem? For legal specialisms, ARAG puts you in touch with specialists within their network. Call them on +31 (0)33 - 434 24 70. This number is available on working days between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Outside office hours, ARAG can only be reached for urgent emergencies and you will be connected to the ARAG emergency center. The ARAG website (in Dutch) contains several useful online rights checks relating to work and income, holiday travel/vouchers and consumer sales. By answering a few simple questions, you will receive information on your legal position and tips on what you can do. You can access useful sample letters relating to common conflicts or how to prevent them (in Dutch), at no extra charge.
Can I choose my own lawyer?
If you wish to choose your own lawyer, please contact ARAG first. The legal expenses insurance is a benefit in kind policy. This means that the insurer provides legal assistance. For that reason, you cannot hire a lawyer without consulting ARAG and later forward the bills in order to receive compensation.
If you choose your own lawyer in legal or administrative proceedings after you have consulted with ARAG and if it is a legal requirement to be represented by a lawyer, all costs will be covered up to €6,000 per event.
You are obliged to use a lawyer or legal advisor
If you are involved in a proceedings in which you are legally obliged to use a lawyer, you should consult with ARAG first before choosing a lawyer. ARAG will then contact the lawyer or legal advisor. Your costs will be covered up to a maximum of €50,000.
You are not obliged to use a lawyer
If you want legal assistance and are you not legally obliged to use a lawyer or legal advisor in the proceedings, you can choose the lawyer or attorney yourself or use a lawyer or legal advisor selected by ARAG. If you use a lawyer or legal advisor selected by ARAG, the costs are covered up to €50,000. Always contact ARAG first if you want to engage a lawyer yourself.

If you personal situation changes, it might be time to take an insurance check. That way, you can avoid being double insured or even not having enough cover.
