Fraud with debit cards

Sometimes fraudsters try to commit fraud with debit cards. They ask you to send your debit card in, saying that it is about to expire, for example. Do not do this. We will never ask you to send your card to us. Find out how to spot debit card fraud and how you can prevent it.

What fraudsters often do

Fraudsters
may contact you by email, letter or phone asking you to send your debit card to them. You should also be careful when withdrawing cash at an ATM. Sometimes, fraudsters place a device or tiny camera on the card slot of the ATM (skimming). Or they may distract you while you are withdrawing cash to see your PIN or swap your debit card.

Tips to prevent debit card fraud

  1. Never send or hand over your debit card to anyone. We will never ask you to do this!
  2. Never share your security codes, such as your PIN or the 5-digit identification code for the ABN AMRO app.
  3. Do not withdraw cash from an ATM if the machine looks unusual. For instance, if there is a device that you have not seen before on the card slot.
  4. Do not use an ATM if you feel unsafe. For instance, if someone is standing too close to you.
  5. Do not let anyone distract you when withdrawing cash.
  6. Do not accept help from anyone who offers to help you at an ATM.
  7. If an ATM swallows your card, do not leave the machine. First, block your card via the ABN AMRO app or by calling us.

Is your debit card about to expire?

Well before your debit card expires, we will automatically send you a new card. You do not need to ask for a new card.

If you have received and activated a new debit card, cut up your old debit card. Cut the chip into pieces as well. Your old card will then be unusable.
