Everything you need to know about Home Contents Insurance (Inboedelverzekering)

What is Home Contents Insurance?

Home Contents Insurance protects you against the financial consequences of fire, theft and storm. You can also upgrade your policy to include all-risks cover, in which case your home contents will also be covered against most cases of accidental loss or damage. Some instances, however, are not covered. Read the Terms & Conditions (pdf, 395kB) for more details of these.

Terms and Conditions

Who is this for?

For anyone who wants to properly insure their home contents. Indoors and possibly outdoors. Standard insurance is against fire, theft and storm damage.

To have this insurance, you need a current account with ABN AMRO. Insurance premiums will be paid from this account.

What is insured?

You are insured against:

  • Loss of or damage to home contents caused by, for example, fire, theft and storm. Home contents includes all items in your home.

  • Theft from adjoining garages and outbuildings.

  • The costs of clearing up, landscaping and alternative accommodation.

  • External items, e.g. garden furniture.

Reimbursement of additional costs

If you are you claiming on this home contents insurance policy, it is good to know that your home contents insurance also covers additional costs. Reimbursement of additional costs is subject to prior approval from ABN AMRO Schadeverzekeringen N.V.
Possible additional costs include:

  • Restoration of your garden. Please note: If the damage to your garden was caused by storm, precipitation, theft or vandalism, any additional costs incurred will not be reimbursed;

  • Restoration costs for tenancy or ownership interests;

  • Alternative accommodation in the event of your home being uninhabitable;

  • Storage for household possessions;

  • Cleaning of your possessions.

    For a complete overview of what is insured, please see the Terms & Conditions (pdf, 395kB) (pdf, 730kB).

Insured amounts

You are guaranteed against underinsurance for your possessions. This means that, in the event of a total loss, the amount you are reimbursed will never be less than the actual value of your possessions.

For precious possessions in the home, you are insured at current value for € 7,000 per category as standard. This includes:

  • Category 1: jewellery

  • Category 2: video, audio and communications equipment

  • Category 3: rare or antique works of art and collections (with the exception of antique furniture)

  • Category 4: musical instruments, sports equipment and furs

  • Category 5: computer equipment, peripheral devices, laptops, photographic, film and video equipment, smartwatches, e-readers, smartphones, tablets and mobile telephones.

    For a complete overview, please see the Terms & Conditions (pdf, 395kB).

    Is this not sufficient to cover one or more of the aforementioned categories? Then you can insure these precious possessions for a higher amount by paying an extra premium in the home insurance.

    Do you want to insure precious possessions against their purchase or appraisal value? That’s also possible through the payment of an extra premium. This applies to all precious possessions in the relevant category.

Compulsory excess

If you have outdoor coverage which insures computer equipment, peripheral devices, laptops, equipment for photographic, film and video equipment, smartwatches, e-readers, smartphones, tablets, and mobile telephones, then there is a compulsory excess of € 100.

There may be more than one compulsory excess that can apply, but never more than one will be deducted in the event of a claim.

  • Example 1: You live in Amsterdam and suffer a break-in and water damage. If the break-in was the cause of the water damage, then you only pay the compulsory excess of € 225 for loss due to theft. The compulsory excess of € 225 for water damage is not counted.

  • Example 2: You have all-risks insurance and suffer water damage. Then you only pay the € 225 compulsory excess for water damage. The compulsory excess of € 100 for all-risks coverage is not counted.

Voluntary excess

You can also opt for a voluntary excess, which will give you a discount on your premium. The higher the excess, the lower the premium. In the event of a claim, we will deduct the voluntary excess from the amount reimbursed. You can choose from the following amounts for the voluntary excess:

  • €100

  • €250

  • €500

  • The voluntary excess will be added to the applicable compulsory excess. Example: you have taken out water damage cover (with a compulsory excess of €225) and you have chosen a voluntary excess of €100. In the event of a claim, we will combine the excesses (giving €325) and deduct the total from the amount paid out.

Upgrade to all-risks

You can easily upgrade your Home Contents Insurance to all-risks cover, in which case your home contents will be covered against all other risks,  including accidental loss or damage. Some instances, however, are not covered. Read the Terms & Conditions (pdf, 395kB) for more details of these.

Include personal possessions cover

Certain valuables can also be insured away from the home. You will then be covered against damage and theft, anywhere in the world. Valuables include:

  • Group 1: jewellery

  • Group 2: audio, visual and communications equipment

  • Group 3: rare or antique works of art and collections (apart from antique furniture)

  • Group 4: musical instruments, sports equipment and furs

  • Group 5: computer equipment, peripherals, laptops, photographic, film and video equipment, smartphones, tablets and mobile telephones.

    Valuables can be insured away from the home, subject to a maximum of €7,000 for each group. An excess of €100 applies to items in Group 5, for example laptops, tablets and mobile telephones. If you would like more than €7,000 cover for each group, you can take out separate Valuables Insurance. To do so, please call one of our advisers on 0900 - 00 24 (rates explanation).

Include glass cover

You can add glass cover to your Home Contents Insurance, in which case you will be insured against broken windows. If you take out ABN AMRO Home Insurance online, glass cover will be included automatically.

Coverage extension away from home

You can insure some valuables away from the home. You are thereby insured against loss or damage worldwide. Examples include:

  • Category 1: jewellery

  • Category 4: musical instruments, sports equipment and furs

  • Category 5: computer equipment, peripheral devices, laptops, photographic, film and video equipment, smartwatches, e-readers, smartphones, tablets, and mobile telephones. There is a compulsory excess of € 100 for category 5.

    You can insure these valuables away from home up to a maximum of € 7.000 per category. You pay an extra premium for this. You can choose to insure against market value or against purchase or appraisal value. This applies to all valuables in the relevant category. For insurance against purchase or appraisal value, you pay a higher premium than against market value. Do you want to insure away from home for higher than € 7.000 per category? Then contact us to apply for ABN AMRO Kostbaarhedenverzekering. You can call one of our advisors on 0900 - 00 24 (usual call charges).
