How do I open a current account?
1. Download the app
Download the ABN AMRO app and click 'Open account'. You can apply for a Student Account with the ABN AMRO app if you:
- are at least 18 years old
- have an official home address in the Netherlands
- have a valid Dutch identity card, residence permit or international passport
- are liable to tax in the Netherlands
Don't have a BSN yet? Then you can still open an account. However, you must provide us with your BSN within 90 days after opening your account.
2. Submit your proof of identity
Take a picture of your identity document. You can open a current account through the ABN AMRO app with the following identity documents:
- Dutch identification document (identity card, driving licence or passport)
- Residence permit (type I, II, III, IV, V, EU/EER of EU/EER familielid)
- EU/EER identity card (except Greece and Romania)
- International passport (except United States passport)
Tips for your photo:
- Avoid glare and do not use the flash
- Make sure your passport is within the frame
- Use a dark background
3. Take a picture
Take a picture of yourself using your mobile phone so that we can check that you are the person on the identity document.
Tips for your photo:
- Take the photo in a light environment
- Make sure you do not have any backlight (e.g. from the sun behind you)
- Hold the camera directly in front of your face
4. Answer some questions
We want to get to know you better so that we can provide you with the best service. That is why we want to ask you to answer a few questions and check that everything is correct.
5. You've sent your application!
We will check the information you have entered and open your account for you. You will be updated on the status of your request by text message and email within 4 hours after completing the application. If your application is approved, the message will also explain the next steps. Your account will soon be ready to use.
6. Upload your proof of residence
When you open an account with a non-Dutch passport or ID, we need to verify that you live in the Netherlands. We therefore need your proof of residence in the Netherlands.
Once your proof of residence is approved you can start using your account or open other products. Read more on proof of residence.
Please note: an extract from the Non-residents Records Database (in Dutch: Registratie Niet-ingezetenen or RNI) will not be accepted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which type of current account does this promotion apply to?
This promotion applies to the free Student Account.
How does the promotion work?
Simply download the ABN AMRO app and follow the steps on the screen. Enter STUDENT in the promotion code field. You will receive the first €25 when you open a Student Account and activate your app and debit card. If you open a free Direct Savings account within 3 months, you will receive another €25. And if you make 20 payments within the same 3 months, you will receive another €25. You will recognise the payment from our payment reference on your statement:
Gift 1 - Activate app and card
Gift 2 - Direct Savings account has been opened
Gift 3 - 20 payments made
Tip: Transferring one cent 20 times obviously doesn’t count as 20 payments. Make 20 proper payments with your (digital)debit card, and you will earn your third €25.
When will the money be paid into my account?
The money will be paid into your account within a few months. The processing time for the promotion may mean that it takes a month longer. We check whether you’ve completed one or more of the 3 steps on the last working day of the month. The check for paying out the final €25 (step 3) is carried out 6 months after you open your account. You will see your gift on your next statement, minus your regular monthly fee. The check for paying out the final €25 (step 3) is carried out 6 months after you open your account.
Take a look at the terms and conditions for more detailed information.

Which forms of identification can I use to open a current account at ABN AMRO?
You can open a Student Account and identify yourself through the ABN AMRO app with the following forms of identification:
- Dutch identity document (identity card, driving licence or passport)
- International passport (except United States passport)
- EU/EER identity card (except Greece and Romania)

You can open an account and identify yourself by appointment with the identity documents listed below:
- Dutch identity document (identity card, driving licence or passport)
- EU/EER identity document
- Residence permit (type I/IV)
I have a passport from the United States. Can I open a current account?
In this case, you can only become a client at an ABN AMRO branch. Make an appointment at one of our branches to do this. You can do this by contacting us (standard call charges apply).
The identity document details that have been entered are incorrect. Can I still make changes?
After you upload your identity document, you will be asked to verify the details. You can change your name and date of birth if necessary. Your application may be rejected if the details cannot be properly verified. You can then restart the application.
Why do I need to provide an extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP)?
We want to be sure that you are who you say you are when you open an account. This helps us to prevent fraud, for example abuse of your current account. For this reason, one of the things we need from you is an extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP). You can request it yourself at your municipality. You can open the account even without the extract, but some features of your current account will not be available in this case, for example deposits and cash withdrawals.
Why do I need to identify myself?
All banks are required to verify the identity of their customers and ABN AMRO is no exception. This requirement is set out in the Dutch Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Prevention) Act and helps to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism.
What if my application is rejected?
You will receive information about the status of your application via SMS and e-mail within 4 hours after completing the application. Has your application been rejected? Then we will explain in the text message why your application has been rejected. In addition, you will see an 'error screen' in the ABN AMRO app. Here you can read what happened and what you can do.
