Progress begins where disadvantage ends

Beginning something new is the key to moving forward. But this doesn’t always go without saying for athletes with a physical or mental disability. We are helping to break down the barriers they face by providing financial support, coaching, our network and a podium. Something that starts out small can lead to massive achievements and triumph.

Wheelchair tennis since 2009

Wheelchair tennis has been a permanent fixture at the ABN AMRO Open since 2009. The sport is now receiving the attention it deserves thanks to equal facilities and broadcasting on TV by the NOS. The ABN AMRO Open wheelchair tennis tournament is the largest indoor tournament in Europe, and serves as an example to many other tournaments.

Esther Vergeer Foundation

Every child deserves a chance to take part in a sport. The Esther Vergeer Foundation and the sports clinics they run in hospitals are our way of helping children with a disability or chronic illness to discover new sports. This way, some 1,800 children every year find out what they are capable of. We call this: small beginnings, big impact.

ABN AMRO introduces the Sports Grant

The ABN AMRO Sports Grant supports ambitious athletes with a physical or mental disability on their path towards elite sport. The grant provides financial support, advice about financial planning and inspiring lessons from Esther Vergeer and Diede de Groot. Talented young people are given a chance to make their sporting dreams come true.

Discover wheelchair tennis and win tickets

If you want to see stars like Diede de Groot and Ruben Spaargaren in action from close by, and find out what it feels like to play tennis in a wheelchair, enter our prize draw before 1 February. We are giving away 160 admission tickets to the tennis and wheelchair tennis finals on 14 and 15 February. You’ll also take part in a wheelchair tennis clinic.

Equal opportunities

Giving talent the chance to develop creates opportunities – for people and society. This is why we do our best to help ambitious people overcome the barriers they encounter. Together with partners in the sports, art & culture and social sectors, we help to break down these barriers. We do this by providing a podium, offering financial support and deploying our expertise and networks.
