When you open an account

Want to open an account with a non-Dutch passport or ID? Then we need to verify that you live in the Netherlands. We therefore need your proof of residence in the Netherlands. On this page you can read how to get your proof of residence. And how you can share it with us.
Why we need your proof of residence
Want to become an client of ABN AMRO? Then you must live in the Netherlands. Or plan to live in the Netherlands for at least 4 months. You also need to register with a municipality. To verify this, we need your proof of residence. We are required by law to check that you have this. And to always make sure that we have your correct personal data. These rules help us prevent financial crime.
Don't have your proof of residence yet? Then you can't use account. Is your proof of residence approved? Then you can start using your account. You can then also take out new products. You have 120 days to provide your proof of residence. Starting from the moment we accepted you as a client. Did you not upload your proof within 120 days? Then our relationship with you as a client will unfortunately end.
How to get and upload proof of your residence
Get proof of residence
We accept several documents as proof of residence:- Proof of registration in the BRP
Are you planning to live in the Netherlands for more than 4 months? Then you need to register in the Municipal Personal Records Database. In Dutch this is called Basisregistratie Personen or BRP. You can do this at the municipality or the expat centre. This is free of charge. After your registration, you will receive a proof of registration. Please upload this.
Please note: the proof of registration may not be more than 6 months old.
An extract from the Non-residents Records Database (in Dutch: Registratie Niet-ingezetenen or RNI) will not be accepted. Go to the website of the Dutch Government (in Dutch: Rijksoverheid) for more information about registering in the BRP.
- The Relocator / HR declaration form
Are you coming to the Netherlands as an expat? With the help of a relocator or the HR department of your employer? Then they can give you an ABN AMRO declaration form. Please upload this form in the quarter in which it's valid. Does your relocator or HR not have this form? If so, please refer your relocator or HR to this page.
It may take some time before you receive your proof of registration in the BRP. Therefore, you may also provide the following documents:- An admission letter from the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)
Has your residence permit been approved? Then you will receive this letter from the IND.
- A certificate of enrolment from a Dutch school or university
Are you going to study in the Netherlands? You can upload your proof of enrolment as a proof of residence. Make sure the proof contains a stamp and signature.
Please note: the documents mentioned above take longer to process. Want to use your account as soon as possible? Then please upload your proof of registration in the BRP. Or the Relocator / HR declaration form.

Upload proof of residence
You need to upload the proof of your residence to the bank. Do this within 120 days after you've opened the account.via the ABN AMRO app

After we have received your proof of residence, we will review your document. Once we've approved it, we will enable all features on your account. This can take up to 48 hours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I upload my proof of residence?
You need to upload your proof of residence within 120 days after you've opened your account. You can do this via the app or via Internet Banking.

What if I don't upload my proof of residence?
Without your proof of residence, your account is not yet available for use. Once your proof of residence is approved, you can start using your account. You can then also open other products. You have 120 days to provide your proof of residence. Starting from the moment we accepted you as a client. Did you not upload your proof within 120 days? Then our relationship with you as a client will unfortunately end.
I also need to provide my citizen service number (in Dutch: burgerservicenummer or BSN). Will you automatically save my BSN when I upload my proof of residence?
No. Unfortunately it is not possible. We can't extract your BSN when you upload your Proof of residence. You will have to provide your BSN separately. Read more about providing your BSN.
Can I upload an old proof of residence?
Your proof of residence may not be older than 6 months. Is your proof of residence older than 6 months? Then please apply for a new extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database (in Dutch: uittreksel BRP). You can do this in the municipality where you live.
