Periodic investing in ETFs
Investing a fixed sum in a selection of ETFs
Investors don’t necessarily have to invest large sums of money. You can also invest periodically. This means investing a small amount on a regular basis over a longer period of time. You can do this with a selection of ETFs. You could invest your chosen amount in these periodic ETFs every month, or place a one-off order. Read more about how periodic investing in ETFs works. Please note: you could lose all or part of your initial investment.

What is periodic investing in ETFs?
Periodic investing in ETFs means that you invest a fixed sum in one or more ETFs on a regular basis. You could opt to invest €50 a month, for example. Periodic ETFs are traded at a set time: every trading day at 9 a.m.
Fraction instead of a whole ETF
Most ETFs are sold as a single item. You pay for one or more whole ETFs at the trading price for that ETF at that moment. But investing €50, for example, in periodic ETFs buys you part of an ETF – 0.5 or 1.3 ETF, for example. As you’re buying a fraction of an ETF, this type of investment is also known as fractional investment. If you’d rather buy whole ETFs, which are traded continually on the stock market, you should choose ETFs from the basic range rather than periodic ETFs.
Spread your risk with periodic investing
Are you an investor who wants to spread their risk? If so, you can do this by diversifying your investments over different products, or by spreading your investments out over time, as with periodic investing. The idea is to invest money regularly, every month for example. This way, your returns will be more resistant to stock market volatility. It will also prevent you from entering the stock market with a hefty sum at the wrong time.

How do I buy periodic ETFs?
To buy periodic ETFs, you’ll need a Self-Directed Investing Basic or a Self-Directed Investing Plus account. Once you’ve logged on, you can select Periodic ETFs from the Self-Directed Investing range in the Fund selector, and submit your order. You’ll then be asked to choose whether you want to invest a lump sum or invest periodically in the periodic ETF you’ve chosen.
How do periodic ETFs differ from standard ETFs?
The range of ETFs includes 20 periodic ETFs. The periodic ETFs are different because you don't have to buy a specific number of whole ETFs, but can invest a sum of your choice instead. This sum might buy you 0.7 or 1.5 periodic ETFs, for example. This makes it possible to invest periodically in these ETFs, by investing a fixed amount per month for example. Another difference between periodic and standard ETFs is that periodic ETFs are bought at a set time every day (8.30 a.m.) This is called the cut-off time. If you’d rather buy whole ETFs that are being traded on the stock market throughout the day, you should choose standard ETFs from the basic range.
Is there a minimum amount for periodic investment in ETFs?
You can start investing with Self-Directed Investing from as little as €20. The same minimum amount applies to periodic ETFs.
