Prepare well

Almost 18! A milestone most young people look forward to. It is also more than just a birthday. From the age of 18, your child is legally financially responsible for themselves, which means a few things need to be arranged.
Read about the key financial matters that will change and what needs to be in place, so your child can enter this new stage of life well prepared.

Building wealth for your child

One off increased gift tax exemption

Did you know you can use the one‑off increased gift tax exemption to give your child a financial boost? For example, to help repay a student loan or buy a first home.

Generation Next Academy

Especially for the children of our clients aged 18–30, we have set up the Generation Next Academy to help them prepare for managing wealth. During the programme, they learn about investing, gifting, entrepreneurship and the influence of money on relationships. And if they have questions or would like advice, they can contact their Next Coach.

What we arrange for your child

  • Young Person’s Growth Account becomes a Student Package
Does your child have a Young Person’s Growth Account? At the start of the first month after their 18th birthday, we will automatically convert it into a free Student Package. The account number and debit card will stay the same. The Student Package is free even if your child does not go on to study.

  • Does your child also have a Private Account? From their 18th birthday onwards, your child will pay fees for this account. See the tariffs page for the monthly fees of a payment account. Would you like to cancel the Private Account? Go to Closing your account.
  •
  • KinderToekomst savings account and KinderBonus Savings will be discontinued
Does your child have a KinderToekomst savings account? When they turn 18, we will close the account in the following January. We will transfer the savings, including basic and bonus interest, to another ABN AMRO savings account in your child’s name.
  • Does your child have KinderBonus Savings? In the month after their 18th birthday, we will transfer the savings on this account, including the basic and bonus interest, to another ABN AMRO savings account in your child’s name.

  • Does your child not yet have a savings account? Then we will open one for them. How this works is described in detail in the frequently asked questions below.

What your child must arrange themselves

  • Apply for DigiD
They will need this, for example, to take out health insurance and to file a tax return. Go to Digid.nl to apply for a DigiD.

  • Arrange insurance
Whether your child moves into student accommodation or not, good insurance is advisable. Use the insurance check to see the most common insurance options for (prospective) students.

  • File a tax return
Your child must file their own annual tax return. This must always be done before 1 May. If they file their tax return in March, they will receive a response before 1 July.

  • Provide proof of identity to ABN AMRO
From your child’s 18th birthday, we need their proof of identity and their signature. You will automatically receive more information about this. From their 18th birthday, your child can easily arrange this themselves using the ABN AMRO app. To do this, they go to Profile in the ABN AMRO app, select Personal details and then Change identity details. The rest is straightforward. It is sensible to check whether other personal details are still correct and update them if needed. Download the ABN AMRO app.

  • Identification via Video Banking
Identification via the ABN AMRO app is the easiest and quickest option, but your son or daughter can also identify themselves via Video Banking. Your child will then have an appointment with one of our colleagues at a time that suits them, simply via a smartphone or laptop. Make an appointment for your son or daughter to be identified through Video Banking.

Young Person’s Growth Account becomes Student Package

The Student Package is a free payment account with a debit card. Even if your child does not (immediately) start studying, they can use it free of charge. The debit card, account number and PIN remain the same as for the Young Person’s Growth Account.

Taking out insurance independently

Is your child going to study and move into student accommodation? Then it is advisable to take out Student Insurance. This covers contents, liability and, if desired, accidents.

Filing a tax return for the first time

Turning 18 also means filing a tax return independently. It may feel a little daunting the first time. You can help your child with this. A DigiD is required to file a tax return.

Most frequently asked questions from parents and young adults

Can I still view my child’s account?

No, you can no longer view your child’s account as you could with the Young Person’s Growth Account. Your child is now 18 and financially responsible for themselves. As a parent, you are still legally required to provide financial support until your child turns 21.

Would you still like insight into your child’s account? Ask your child to give you authorisation. This can be arranged in just a few steps.

What if my child does not yet have a debit card?

Does your child not yet have a debit card? You can request one via the ABN AMRO app in just a few steps. From their 18th birthday onwards, your child can request a debit card themselves through the ABN AMRO app. Before their 18th birthday, you as the parent can request a debit card on their behalf.

What happens to your savings products?

Does your child have a KinderToekomst savings account?

When your child turns 18, we will close the account in the following January. We will transfer the savings, including the basic and bonus interest, to another ABN AMRO savings account in your child’s name. If your child does not have another ABN AMRO savings account, we will open one for them. Around that time, we will send you a letter with more information.

Does your child have KinderBonus Savings?

We calculate the final bonus interest on the balance on the last day of the month in which your child turns 18.

In the first week of the month after your child’s 18th birthday, we will close the KinderBonus Savings account. During this process, the balance will be temporarily unavailable. We will transfer the savings, including bonus interest, within 3 working days to another ABN AMRO savings account in your child’s name. If your child does not have another ABN AMRO savings account, we will open one for them.

Example: if your child turns 18 on 9 January, we will transfer the money in the first week of February.
Note: your child will only receive this final bonus interest if the savings remain in the account until the end of the month in which they turn 18.

As a parent, do I still have control over the savings after my child turns 18?

No. For the KinderToekomst savings account and/or KinderBonus Savings, the money saved is considered a gift to your child. You are the account holder only until your child turns 18. From the moment your child reaches 18, they may independently manage the savings on these and any other accounts in their own name. Because your child becomes an adult and can make their own decisions, we will automatically remove your access to their accounts.

Would you still like insight into their account? Ask your child to give you authorisation. This can be arranged in just a few steps.

Keep gift tax in mind

You may have saved a substantial amount for your child. From their 18th birthday, your child can freely use these funds. Are you concerned about this and would prefer your child not to have access to the money? If you transfer the savings back to your own (savings) account, it is important to know that the Dutch Tax Administration considers this a gift from your child to you. Depending on your specific situation and the amount involved, you may need to pay gift tax.

If you want to know whether this applies to your situation, check the gift tax exemption for this year. The Tax Administration or a civil-law notary can also give you more information.

Does my child need to take out their own health insurance?

Yes, once your child turns 18, they must have their own health insurance. Also remember to apply for healthcare benefit, which can help reduce the cost.

Do child benefit and child-related budget stop?

Yes, from the moment your child turns 18, child benefit and child-related budget stop. As a result, your disposable income will decrease. Other benefits you receive may also change — for example, if your child starts working and continues living at home.
With the Personal Budget Advice from Nibud, you can quickly gain insight into your future income and expenses.

What if my child cannot manage their finances independently?

If your child cannot manage their finances independently, or only with help, there are several ways to manage their payment account together. Your child can authorise you, or you can choose to apply for financial guardianship over your son or daughter. Read more about the available options.
