What is online fraud?

How cybercriminals try to steal your money

Criminals are constantly thinking up new ways to obtain money. Some of the most common forms of online fraud are described below.


Installing malware on your computer

Have you received a request to log in to Internet Banking several times in quick succession? Or perhaps Internet Banking is working much more slowly than usual? This could be a sign that malware has been installed on your computer.

Phishing via e-mail or telephone

Fraudsters also need your e.dentifier code and/or your PIN in order to steal money from you. We will never ask you for these codes, even if you are contacted by telephone or email for an 'important security update' or something similar.


What can criminals do with the money they steal?

If a criminal succeeds in stealing money from your account, we will always try to recover it. It's very important to be aware that we can only take action if you report the theft to the police.

Your money is safe during a DDoS attack

During a DDoS attack, the server is unable to make contact with the secure environment. That means you are not able to log on, but it also means that your bank details and your money are safe.

Checking for irregularities in the data flow

If you use Internet Banking, Access Online or Mobile Banking, we see a flow of information coming from your computer or mobile device. Malware on your computer causes irregularities in that flow of data. If we spot an irregularity, that could be an indication of fraud. If possible, we will hold back a payment pending further investigation. Please note: as a bank, we can only recognise viruses and malware that are already known; that's why it's so important that you also take measures yourself. The fact that no irregularities are spotted does not guarantee that there is no malware present on your computer.

Checking for unusual payment behaviour

Payments that differ from your usual pattern are a sign that we need to be on heightened alert. We also pay closer attention to credit transfers to high-risk countries, as well as to account numbers with a heightened risk profile and product purchases that are susceptible to fraud. Our constant alertness to irregularities means we are able to prevent fraud in many cases. However, not all fraudulent payments show a deviating pattern, and it is therefore important that you also pay close attention. Before sending a payment, always check that the amount and the account number of the payee are correct.
