iDEAL to become Wero
The European payment solution of the future
From 1 October 2026, you can switch to Wero
By the end of 2027, iDEAL is expected to be fully replaced by Wero, a European payment solution. Currently, there are various payment systems in use across Europe, differing by country. All of these systems will be unified into one single system: Wero. Wero offers the same user-friendliness and reliability as iDEAL, with new features that are future-ready.
The transition is taking place in phases and is already underway: more and more payments are now being processed via Wero. From 1 October 2026, you, as a business owner, can also switch to Wero. We will guide you in preparing your payment environment for the future.

Transitioning from iDEAL to Wero
Switching to Wero requires some technical adjustments, such as connecting to new APIs, updating your payment pages, and processing Wero transactions in your administration. We will support you throughout this transition with:
- Our Open API environment featuring APIs, testing options (sandbox), and technical documentation
- iDEAL Merchant Portal with FAQs and logo guidelines
- Email updates sent to the email address you use to log in to the iDEAL Merchant Portal
- Servicedesk, available via email
Wero benefits
A European payment solution
With Wero, customers from other countries can easily make payments through their trusted bank
New features
Modern payment options such as subscriptions, payment on delivery and e-invoicing
Safe and reliable
Like iDEAL, Wero uses the existing infrastructure of banks, offering more control for merchants and clients, including refunds, clear overviews, and purchase protection

Step by step to Wero
From 1 October 2026, you can switch to Wero. Good to know:
- iDEAL is expected to remain available until 31 December 2027
- New features will be introduced step by step throughout 2027
- You can choose when to switch, at the time that best suits your business
Timelines for business clients with an iDEAL contract
The transition to Wero in 2026 and 2027 will take place in stages. If you have an iDEAL contract with us, this is how the transition will affect you in each stage.
April 2026: The first payments through Wero
Some of your payments will be made through Wero from this date. Your customers will be notified that they are making an iDEAL-Wero payment when they use the system for the first time. The steps for making payments will be the same.
June 2026: We send you a letter about the moment of transition
We will send business clients with an iDEAL contract a letter with more information about the transition and how we can support you through it.
Late 2026: Technical transition to Wero and new payments options
You can start the technical implementation of Wero. The documents and instructions will be ready for you. The new payment options will gradually be made available to consumers.
Late 2027: Wero is the new way to pay
The transition to Wero will be complete. All payments will now be made through Wero.
Everything about purchase protection
What is purchase protection with Wero?
Purchase protection ensures that customers can pay safely and with confidence. It is a consumer right and will be available for international customers from 1 October 2026.
For Dutch customers, this feature will be introduced at a later stage. If something goes wrong with an order (e.g., it is not delivered or does not match the agreement), the customer can dispute the payment. The customer must first attempt to resolve the issue directly with you. If this is unsuccessful, they can initiate a request through their bank. You will retain influence by responding promptly and effectively. As a business owner, you cannot disable purchase protection.
What this means for you as a merchant
Purchase protection can work to your advantage. It increases customer trust, encouraging them to buy from you more readily. It also ensures clear and fair dispute resolution based on facts such as order details and delivery proof. This allows you to defend yourself effectively and resolve conflicts professionally.
When can a customer use it?
A customer can initiate purchase protection if:
- The payment was made via Wero
- The product was not delivered
- The product or service does not match the agreement
Does a customer have to contact me first before starting purchase protection?
Yes, the customer must always first attempt to resolve the issue directly with you. Not all payments are covered by purchase protection; certain sectors are excluded.
How does it work?
- The customer submits a request via their bank
- You will receive this in a secure environment
- Together, you will try to reach a solution
- If unsuccessful, an investigation may be initiated
In most cases, issues are resolved at an early stage.
Are there costs?
Costs only apply if a dispute results in an official claim and you are not found in the right:
- You may need to refund (part of) the amount
- Additional costs may be charged by your payment service provider
- If you are found in the right, you will not incur any costs.
How can you prevent requests?
Good service prevents most requests. It is important that you:
- Respond quickly and clearly to customers
- Keep thorough records (orders, delivery, communication)
- Be transparent about products, delivery, and conditions
- Process refunds promptly and transparently
- Always respond to requests through the secure environment
Clear communication and a strong administration reduce the likelihood of disputes.
Can I disable purchase protection for my webshop?
This is only possible if your business is excluded from purchase protection based on the linked Merchant Category Code (MCC code).

Good to know
Consumers will be informed about the changes by their own bank. Wero will ensure that the transition for businesses goes as smoothly as possible.
If you have an iDEAL contract with us, we’ll explain each step as it happens and give you plenty of time to make any changes. The iDEAL Merchant Portal provides an explanation of the changes, a Logo manual and an Implementation Guide for your transaction records.
