ABN AMRO’s car insurance lets you decide exactly how your car is insured. Third-party liability cover is mandatory, but apart from that you can choose the cover that is right for you. You only pay for what you choose, and if you change your mind, you have the option of updating your insurance any day.

Our car insurance explained

ABN AMRO’s car insurance (third-party liability option) provides third-party liability cover in the event of damage caused to others by your car. This cover is mandatory for all car owners.

  • You can also get additional cover for your own car for things like theft, fire, window damage, storms and collisions with animals. (Third-party liability + limited cover)
  • If you opt for comprehensive cover, any damage to your car that you cause yourself will also be covered. (Third-party liability + comprehensive cover)

Car insurance taken out before 4 December 2017

If you took out ABN AMRO's car insurance before 4 December 2017, your policy and its terms and conditions (in Dutch) will be a little different. 

Take a look at our useful list of the differences (in Dutch) between the old and new car insurance policies.

Switching from your current car insurance policy to the new one could not be easier. Simply call our advisers at the Contact Centre on 0900 – 00 24 (usual call charges apply). They would be happy to help you.

Who it is for

ABN AMRO’s car insurance covers the car you purchase as a private individual or self-employed professional. Premiums for our car insurance are debited from your ABN AMRO current account.

If you are not an ABN AMRO customer, you can simply open an account using your smartphone.

We also have a business car insurance policy for vans used for professional purposes. This not only covers the van itself, but also its contents (e.g. tools) and/or framework and lettering, if you choose the relevant options. If you use your private car for business purposes or to transport goods and/or people in return for payment, this policy is not appropriate for you. You will need to insure your car for business purposes instead. If you are self-employed, you can also insure your car exclusive of VAT. Any claims you make are also paid out exclusive of VAT.

What is insured

ABN AMRO’s car insurance covers damage to third parties caused by your car. This is called third-party liability and is mandatory for all car owners.

In addition, you can:

  • get your own car covered against theft, fire, window damage, storms and collisions with animals (third-party liability insurance with limited cover)
  • get comprehensive cover for your car. In this case, your car will also be covered against damage that you cause yourself (third-party liability insurance with comprehensive cover)

Replacement value scheme (third-party liability + limited cover or third-party liability + comprehensive cover)

In the event of total loss, theft or a claim for more than two thirds of the replacement value, you will receive your car's replacement value as long as:

  • the loss or damage arises within 1 year of the car’s first registration date. Otherwise, ABN AMRO Verzekeringen will cover the costs of repair
  • the car’s list price is no more than € 100,000

Purchase value scheme (third-party liability + limited cover or third-party liability + comprehensive cover)

In the event of total loss, theft or a claim for more than two thirds of the replacement value, you will receive your car's purchase value as long as:

  • the loss or damage arises no more than 1 year after you purchase the car. Otherwise, ABN AMRO Verzekeringen will cover the costs of repair
  • the car is between 1 and 6 years old on the insurance start date
  • the car’s list price is no more than €75,000
  • you have purchased the car from a company registered with the Chamber of Commerce
  • you take out the insurance policy no more than 1 year after purchasing the car

You can renew the replacement value or purchase value scheme by 1 or 2 years if the car is less than 1 year old or during the first renewal year. The replacement value scheme is only available if you have taken out either third-party liability insurance with limited cover or third-party liability insurance with comprehensive cover.

Additional cover

Cover against damage suffered by passengers

This covers both physical and material injury to you and your passengers, suffered as a result of an accident involving your car. This includes, for example, damage to personal property, permanent disability or occupational disability, regardless of who is at fault. Damage is covered up to a maximum of €1,000,000 per incident.

Cover against car passenger accidents

This product pays out up to €20,000 per seat in the event of permanent disability or €7,500 per seat in the event of death, for up to a maximum of 8 passengers.

Car legal expenses

This product covers legal expenses in the event of a dispute or if a dispute seems likely to arise in connection with your car, for example, if there is a difference of opinion as to who is at fault in the event of an accident. You are also covered for legal expenses if someone else causes damage to you and/or your car, for example, if it is unclear who is at fault or if you want to recover the costs from another party. You are also covered in the event of a dispute with your brand dealer or BOVAG-affiliated garage.

Breakdown assistance in the Netherlands (including your place of residence)

This product covers roadside assistance if your car can no longer be driven due to a technical or electronic fault.

Breakdown assistance can involve repairing simple defects, towing your car to a garage and appropriate transport if repairs are not possible.

If your car breaks down in the middle of a journey and cannot be repaired at the place where it broke down, you will receive a courtesy car within 2 hours (95% of cases based on figures from March/April 2017).

Breakdown assistance abroad

This product covers roadside assistance abroad if your car can no longer be driven due to a technical or electronic fault.

If the driver is unable to drive any longer, replacement transport will be rearranged and your car (and trailer if applicable) will be brought back to the Netherlands.

If the repairs take longer than 24 hours, this module also covers the costs of a courtesy car for 3 weeks.

Replacement value and purchase value schemes

The replacement value and purchase value schemes can both be renewed for 1 or 2 years. The replacement value scheme is only available if you have taken out either third-party liability insurance with limited cover or third-party liability insurance with comprehensive cover.

Payout for losses or damage

Not insured
  • Damage caused in a country that does not participate in the green card system, or no longer does so
  • Liability of someone who has stolen your car or taken it by force.

Claim-free years and no-claims bonus

Your number of claim-free years determines the no-claims bonus you will receive at the start of your insurance policy. Find out more about claim-free years and the no-claims bonus.

Your excess in the event of a claim

If you incur any loss or damage, please let us know as soon as possible. You can get in touch with ABN AMRO 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Find out more about how to submit a claim.

You will need to pay an excess if your entire car window needs to be replaced. If you use the ABN AMRO Schade Service, your excess will be €75. However, if you decide not to, you will pay €150.

Security
If your car is not adequately secured, you will pay an excess of 2.5% of the car’s list price (subject to a minimum of €375).

ABN AMRO Schade Service
You are free to choose where you have the damage repaired. However, ABN AMRO has put together a network of repair companies especially for you, so you can be sure the repairs will be carried out professionally. If you have your car repaired by one of these specialist companies, you will benefit from the following:

  • ABN AMRO will pay the bill straight to the repair company
  • Free alternative transport while your vehicle is being repaired, for up to 30 days, but not in the case of damage to windows
  • 4-year guarantee on the repairs
  • Our car repair network includes brand dealers
  • No excess in the case of theft (or attempted theft), break-in or joyriding if you use the ABN AMRO Schade Service and your car meets the security conditions
  • No excess if you have a chip in your windscreen repaired through the ABN AMRO Schade Service
Premium, costs and discounts

Premium

Your premium depends on the following:

  • your car
  • the cover you choose
  • your age
  • your town/city
  • your number of claim-free years
  • the number of kilometres driven in your car
  • your personal details

Commission

Initial costs (including policy costs)

You will pay initial costs of €9.98 (including insurance tax) for ABN AMRO’s car insurance. This will cover your registration with the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority), as well as the drafting and sending of the policy, green card and European claims form.

The RDW will check whether you have third-party liability cover for damage caused to others by your car. This cover is mandatory for all cars.

Administrative costs

If this is the first non-life insurance policy you are taking out with ABN AMRO, you will also pay €0.69 (including insurance tax) for monthly or annual collection of the premium. If you already have one or more ABN AMRO non-life insurance policies, you will not be charged an administration fee.

Insurance tax

You will be charged 21% insurance tax on the ABN AMRO car insurance premium and costs. This amount will be included in the calculation of your premium.

Package discount

If you take out more than 3 insurance policies with ABN AMRO, you will qualify for a 5% package discount 

Discount for additional cars

Up to 7 claim-free years 

ABN AMRO Schadeverzekeringen N.V. will calculate your premium based on the car with the most claim-free years. The same discount will apply to the other cars up to a maximum of 70%. 

More than 7 claim-free years

If you want to insure additional cars with seven or more claim-free years, you will receive a higher discount of up to 80%.

Green card

When you take out car insurance, you will receive a green card. This is international proof of your insurance that you can use abroad. The card lists the countries you are insured in and the telephone numbers you will need in an emergency. You will receive a new green card each year.

If you are going on holiday with a caravan, you will also need a green card for your caravan if you travel to Germany, Poland or Spain.

If you lose your green card, request a new one. Or call us on 0900 - 00 24 (usual call charges apply).

Cancellation

You can cancel your policy free of charge within 14 days of taking it out. Simply send the policy to the following address (no stamp required):

You can cancel the insurance policy at any time without giving a reason. Your insurance will end at midnight of the day you cancel it unless you select another date for cancellation to take effect. In this case, the insurance will end on the date you choose.
