ABN AMRO’s Home Contents Insurance explained

The ABN AMRO home contents insurance covers loss or damage to the possessions in your home. With the comprehensive cover, your home contents are insured against damage or loss caused by, for example, fire, storm, vandalism, robbery and theft. Read the terms and conditions.

If you took out your ABN AMRO home contents insurance before 4 September 2006, your policy and terms and conditions will be a little different.

If you took out ABN AMRO’s home contents insurance between 4 September 2006 and 29 April 2012, your policy and terms and conditions will be a little different too.

Who it is for

ABN AMRO’s home contents insurance is for personal customers of ABN AMRO residing in the Netherlands.

The following people are covered:

  • you
  • your spouse or partner
  • your children living at home

If you would like to take out the home contents insurance, you will need an ABN AMRO current account . This is the account you will use to pay the insurance premium.

What is insured

You are insured for things such as:

  • loss of or damage to home contents caused by, for example, fire, theft or storm
  • garden furniture in your garden
  • personal property in your garage or shed
  • personal property kept out of sight in a locked vehicle or boat

A maximum cover amount applies to, for example, possessions kept outside your home.

What is never covered

You are never covered for loss or damage:

  • to a possession caused in any part by intent or serious negligence on your part
  • caused by treating or cleaning an item covered under your home contents insurance
  • caused by precipitation entering through an open window or door
  • arising due to an inherent defect in the item or the item no longer working
  • to a motor vehicle, glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, or a hearing aid

Excess

Compulsory excess

The following compulsory excess amounts apply to the ABN AMRO home contents insurance:

  • an excess of €225 applies to water damage
  • If you live in Amsterdam, Arnhem, Breda, Den Bosch, Eindhoven, Heerlen, Kerkrade, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, The Hague, Tilburg or Utrecht, there is an excess of € 225 for theft. This excess will not apply if you have taken burglary prevention measures for your home. These security measures must meet the standards of Stichting Borg or have a Politiekeurmerk Veilig Wonen certificate.

If you have personal possessions cover and this also covers your photographic, film and video equipment, computer equipment, peripherals, laptops, tablets, e-readers, smartwatches, smartphones and mobile phones, the compulsory excess is a € 100. If you have all risks cover, the compulsory excess is € 100 per claim.

Voluntary excess 

You can also opt for a voluntary excess, in which case you will receive a discount on your premium. The higher the excess, the lower the premium. You can choose from the following amounts for the voluntary excess:

  • €100
  • €250
  • €500 

The voluntary excess will be added to the applicable compulsory excess.

Commission

ABN AMRO Bank N.V. provides personal customers with non-life insurance products and advises them on behalf of ABN AMRO Schadeverzekering N.V. ABN AMRO Bank N.V. receives a fee for this. Policy fee

You will receive one policy document for each type of insurance. The policy fee is €4.39 (including insurance tax). If you have another non-life insurance policy with ABN AMRO, you will not need to pay an additional policy fee if you take out home contents insurance in this package.

Administration fee

If this is your first ABN AMRO non-life insurance policy, you will be charged an administration fee of €0.69 (including 21% insurance tax) for collecting the premium, which may be done monthly or annually. If you already have another non-life insurance policy with ABN AMRO, you will not be charged an administration fee this time.

Insurance tax

You will be charged 21% insurance tax on the premium and costs for the ABN AMRO home contents insurance. This amount will be included in the calculation of your premium.

Insured amounts

You have full protection against under-insuring your home contents. In other words, in the event of total loss, you will never receive less than the true value of your home contents.

Maximum insured amounts

  • cash and cash equivalents in your home are insured up to €1250
  • your personal property located in another building (in the Netherlands only) has comprehensive cover up to a maximum of €5000 per event
  • your personal property kept out of sight in a locked vehicle or boat (in the Netherlands only) has comprehensive cover up to a maximum of €500 per event

If you would like to see what your compensation will be in the event of a claim, you can check the list of depreciation rates. This lists the average life and annual depreciation rate for each item.

For valuable items in your home, you are insured at current value for €7000 per category as standard. The categories are:

  • category 1: jewellery
  • category 2: audio, visual and communications equipment
  • category 3: art, collections with a rarity value and antiques (apart from antique furniture)
  • category 4: musical instruments and sports equipment
  • category 5: photographic, film and video equipment, computer equipment, peripherals, laptops, tablets, e-readers, smartwatches, smartphones and mobile phones.

If this cover is not sufficient for one or more of the categories listed above, you can insure these valuables for a higher amount while they are in your home, in which case you will pay a higher premium. Call us on 0900 0024 to find out more (usual call charges apply).

You can also arrange to have your most valuable possessions covered for their appraised value, in which case you will pay a higher premium. This cover will then apply to all high-value possessions in the relevant category.

All risks, glass cover and personal possessions cover

All risks

If you take out all risks insurance, your home contents will be covered against other risks as well, including accidental damage caused by a fall and/or impact. Some situations, however, are never covered.

Please note that the all risks cover has a compulsory excess of €100 per claim.

Glass cover

You can opt to take out glass cover as well, which is all risks cover. You will then be insured for the cost of replacing glass in the event of sudden and unforeseen breakage during normal use. We also reimburse the cost of breakage of special glass like stained glass windows up to €1000.

Bear in mind that you may already be covered for such damage under another policy, e.g. when:

  • you own your house or flat and the glass is covered under your buildings insurance
  • you rent and the owner already has glass cover for your home

The ABN AMRO Home Insurance with all risks cover includes glass cover as standard.

If you have a broken window or other glass damage, arrangements for the professional repair or replacement will be made within 2 hours with ABN AMRO's Emergency Glass Repair service.

Personal possessions cover

With the personal possessions cover, when you take your valuables with you outside the home, they have all risks cover for damage, theft and more worldwide. These personal possessions may be, for example:

  • category 1: jewellery
  • category 4: musical instruments and sports equipment
  • category 5: photographic, film and video equipment, computer equipment, peripherals, laptops, tablets, e-readers, smartwatches, smartphones and mobile phones. For category 5 items, a compulsory excess of €100 applies.

Under the personal possessions cover, your valuables taken outside the home will be covered up to a maximum of €7000 for each category. You pay a higher premium for this extra cover. The standard cover is for the current value, but you can opt to insure your valuables in categories 1 and 4 for their purchase value or the appraised value. This cover will then apply to all high-value possessions in the relevant category. You pay a higher premium for insuring these valuables at their purchase/appraised value rather than at their current value. Call us on 0900 0024 to find out more (usual call charges apply)..

Discount

Mortgage discount

If you have an ABN AMRO mortgage, you qualify for a 10% discount on your premium. However, the mortgage discount is not applied to the additional cover for valuables inside and outside your home. When you take out the home contents insurance, simply state that you have a mortgage with ABN AMRO and you will be shown a premium with the mortgage discount applied. If you have taken out the home contents insurance without the mortgage discount and later take out a mortgage with ABN AMRO, please call 0900 - 00 24 (usual call charges apply) and we will make sure that you receive the mortgage discount starting with your next premium payment.

Prevention discount

If your home is secured against burglary, you are entitled to 20% discount on the premium for:

  • comprehensive or all risks cover
  • additional glass cover

However, the prevention discount is not applied to the additional cover for valuables inside and outside your home.

The security measures you take must comply with the terms and conditions of ABN AMRO Schadeverzekeringen. You will need to send your home security certificates to ABN AMRO Schadeverzekering N.V.

Discount with a voluntary excess

If you opt for a voluntary excess, your premium will be lower for:

  • comprehensive or all risks cover
  • the additional cover for valuables inside and outside the home

Package discount

If you take out more than 3 insurance policies with ABN AMRO, you will qualify for a 5% package discount.

Policy commencement

You can choose when the policy will take effect, either right away or from a later date.
