Features of the updated ABN AMRO Car Insurance

  • Our updated car insurance explained

ABN AMRO Car Insurance provides third party liability cover in the event of damage caused to others by your car. This third party liability cover is mandatory for every car. You can also extend your ABN AMRO Car Insurance cover:

    - You can get third-party liability insurance plus limited cover for your own car for damage caused by theft, fire, window damage, storms and collisions with animals, for example.
    - If you take out third-party liability insurance plus comprehensive cover for your car, your car will also be covered for damage that you cause yourself.

  • Who it is for

ABN AMRO Car Insurance provides cover for the car you use for personal purposes. You can also take out our car insurance if you are self-employed. If you use your car for business purposes or to transport goods or people in return for payment, then this policy is not appropriate for you. You need to insure your car for business purposes instead. If you are self-employed, you can also insure your car exclusive of VAT. In this case, your premium will be calculated based on this lower list price. Any claims you make are also paid out exclusive of VAT.

You need an ABN AMRO current account to be eligible to take out ABN AMRO Car Insurance. The premium for your car insurance will be automatically debited from this account.

  • Terms and conditions

  • What is insured

ABN AMRO Car Insurance covers damage to third parties caused by your car. This is called third party liability and is mandatory for every car. In addition, you can:

    • take out third-party liability insurance plus limited cover for your own car for theft, fire, window damage, storms and collisions with animals;

    • take out third-party liability insurance plus comprehensive cover for your car so that your car will also be covered for damage that you cause yourself.

We have compiled a convenient list of the differences between these types of cover for you. You can view the differences here.

Find out what additional cover options are available for your car insurance under the heading 'Additional cover options'.

  • Additional cover options

You can extend your ABN AMRO Car Insurance cover by taking out one of the following additional insurance modules:

    Car Indemnity Occupants Insurance
This insurance policy covers both physical injuries and material damage to you and your passengers as a result of an accident involving your car. This includes, for example, damage to personal property, permanent disability or occupational disability, regardless of who is at fault. Damage is covered up to a maximum of €1,000,000 per incident.

    Replacement value scheme
For cars which are less than one year old at the start of the insurance policy. From the start of the insurance policy, the new car is covered up to one year as standard on the basis of the replacement value. In the event of a total loss or theft, the replacement value is covered and you can buy the same car again. The replacement value scheme can be extended by one or two years. The scheme is only available if you have taken out either third-party liability insurance plus limited cover or third-party liability insurance plus comprehensive cover for your car.

    Purchase value scheme
    • Cars between one and six years old at the start of the insurance policy;
    • Maximum list price of €75,000;
    • Bought from a company registered with the Chamber of Commerce;
    • Insurance must have taken effect within one year of the car being bought.
The purchase value scheme is only available if you have taken out either third-party liability insurance plus limited cover or third-party liability insurance plus comprehensive cover for your car.

    Car Legal Expenses Insurance
This insurance policy covers legal expenses in the event of a dispute or if a dispute threatens to arise in connection with your car, for example, if there is a difference of opinion as to who is at fault in the event of an accident. You are also covered for legal expenses if someone else causes damage to you and/or your car, for example, if it unclear who is at fault or if you want to recover the costs from another party. You are also covered in the event of a dispute with your brand dealer or BOVAG-affiliated company.

    Car Passenger Accident Insurance
This insurance policy covers payouts in the event that a passenger dies (€7,500) or is left permanently disabled (€20,000) as the result of a car accident. Up to eight people are insured in the event of permanent disability.

Car Breakdown Assistance Insurance in the Netherlands (including in your home town/city): immediate breakdown assistance (mobility service)
This insurance policy entitles you to breakdown assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you are no longer able to use your car as the result of a mechanical or electrical fault (or a flat tyre). You are covered for breakdowns in the Netherlands, including in your home town or city. You will receive a courtesy car within two hours if your car breaks down and can't be repaired on-site (95% of cases based on figures from March/April 2017). You will also receive a courtesy car if your car is damaged and you can no longer use it. We'll have you back on the road within two hours.

    Car Breakdown Assistance Insurance Abroad
This insurance policy entitles you to breakdown assistance abroad 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you are no longer able to use your car as the result of a mechanical or electrical fault. If the repairs take longer than 24 hours, this insurance policy also covers the costs of a courtesy car for up to 15 working days. If the driver is no longer able to drive, the car and the driver, as well as any passengers, luggage and trailers (e.g. a caravan), will be transported back to the Netherlands.

You will be sent a new green card each year shortly after the renewal date of your insurance package.

If you lose your green card, please call us on 0900 - 81 70 (explanation of the rates) to request a new one.

You need a second green card if you go on holiday with a caravan to Germany, Poland or Spain. Please call us on 0900 - 81 70 (explanation of the rates) to request a second card.

  • How your car insurance premium is calculated

The following details are taken into account when calculating your premium:
    • your car's details
    • where you live
    • the number of claim-free years
    • the number of kilometres travelled
    • the driver’s details
    • the cover options selected, and
    • the additional cover options selected

  • Discount

If you take out more than two non-life insurance policies in a single package with ABN AMRO, you receive a discount. If car insurance is your third insurance policy, we will also give you a discount on your first two insurance policies.

    • If you have three insurance policies, you receive a 3% discount.
    • If you have four insurance policies, you receive a 4% discount.
    • If you have five or more insurance policies, you receive a 5% discount.

  • Costs

    Commission
ABN AMRO Bank N.V. acts as an intermediary for and advises personal customers on ABN AMRO Schadeverzekering N.V. non-life insurance products. ABN AMRO Schadeverzekering N.V. pays ABN AMR Bank N.V. a fee for this. More information about us and our services is available on the: Informatieblad Schadeverzekeringen (pdf, 488kB) (in Dutch).

    Initial costs
You will be charged €9.98 for the ABN AMRO Car Insurance. This amount includes 21% insurance tax. These costs cover your registration with the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) and the European claims form.

    Administrations fees
You will be charged an administration fee of €0.69 (including 21% insurance tax) for collecting the premium. If you already have another non-life insurance policy with ABN AMRO, you will not be charged an administration fee. If this is your first ABN AMRO non-life insurance policy, administration fees will be collected at the same time as the premium, i.e. monthly or annually. The total amount for all non-life insurance policies will be debited from your account in a single debit.

    Policy costs
There are no policy costs for ABN AMRO Car Insurance.

    Insurance tax
You will be charged 21% insurance tax on the ABN AMRO Car Insurance premium and costs, which you will see reflected on your premium calculation.

  • Claim-free years

The number of claim-free years you have accumulated is important when applying for car insurance, because it determines the no-claims bonus you will receive at the start of your insurance policy. You need to enter the number of claim-free years when calculating your premium. A claim-free year is an insurance year in which you have not submitted any claims affecting your no-claims bonus level. Find out more about how the number of claim-free years is determined

How to find out your number of claim-free years
The number of claim-free years is stated on your car insurance policy. Claim-free years remain valid with ABN AMRO Verzekeringen N.V. for up to four years, even if you do not have car insurance.
Please note: you can only accumulate claim-free years for a car insurance policy which is registered in your name (i.e. if you are the policyholder). The insurer will check the number of claim-free years you enter against a central database in which all insurers register their customers’ claim-free years. If the number given in the database does not match the number you specify, the insurer will use the number of claim-free years recorded in the database. This could affect your premium, so be sure to check that you have entered the number correctly!

    Leased cars
If you lease your car, please request a copy of your lease statement from your leasing company. The claim-free years stated on your lease statement remain valid for up to four years.

    Recent claims
If you have only recently made a claim, the number of claim-free years on your policy may be incorrect, or your number of claim-free years may be negative. In either case, please contact one of our advisers on 0900-00 24 (usual call charges apply) to calculate your premium.

  • No-claims bonus

If you have not submitted any claims for a longer period of time, you will benefit from a higher discount on your premium. The number of claim-free years partly determines your no-claims bonus level based on the so-called no-claims scheme. There is a specific premium discount for each level. This is also referred to as a no-claims bonus. For more information, please refer to the Explanation of claim-free years and no-claims bonus scale.

  • Multi-car no-claims bonus

If you insure multiple cars with ABN AMRO, the no-claims bonus for the car with the most claim-free years (up to 70%) will also apply to the other cars. This means that you can always benefit from the highest discount. You will continue to receive this extra discount for as long as you have multiple cars insured. It will cease to apply as soon as you only have one car insured with us. Please note: if you took out ABN AMRO Car Insurance before 4 December 2017, this does not apply to you. Please contact one of our advisers on 0900 - 81 70 (explanation of the rates). Find out more about the multi-car no-claims bonus.

  • Security conditions

A well-secured car is important in order to minimise the risk of break-ins and theft. This is why the following security requirements apply to both limited and comprehensive insurance cover:

    1. Convertibles, off-road vehicles, sports cars and other cars with over €7,500 worth of non-factory fitted accessories must have a VbV/SCM-approved alarm system including gradient detection installed.
    2. Cars with a list price of more than €50,000 must have a VbV/SCM-approved alarm system including gradient detection installed.
    3. Cars with a list price of more than €125,000 must be fitted with a VbV/SCM-approved alarm system including gradient detection as well as a car and home-jacking system, or a VbV/SCM-approved vehicle tracking system.

  • Policy commencement

You can choose when you would like your insurance policy to start. This can be straight away or on another date of your choice. The date can be up to six months into the future.

  • When to cancel

You can cancel the insurance policy at any time without giving a reason. Your insurance will end at midnight of the day you cancel it unless you select another date for cancellation to take effect. In this case, the insurance will end on the date you choose.

Please note: retrospective cancellation is not permitted

  • Submitting a claim

Any loss or damage should be reported to us as soon as possible. ABN AMRO is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    By telephone
    Call us on 0900 - 81 70 (explanation of the rates) . From abroad, dial +31 26 400 23 45.
Tip: save these numbers in your phone.

    Travelling abroad by car
If you decide to travel abroad by car, make sure you take your green card and a local European Accident Statement with you. You get both the card and the form for free when you take out an ABN AMRO Car Insurance.

    How claims are processed
No one expects their car to be damaged, but if it is, it’s important that you call ABN AMRO right away so that we can deal with your claim as quickly and efficiently as possible. Once you have submitted a claim, the insurer will start processing it and check whether the cause of the damage is covered under your insurance policy, or whether the services of a loss adjuster are required. Whether you will receive any compensation and how much this will be is also determined. If we have all the information we need, we’ll always let you know the outcome of your claim within eight working days.

The role of the personal claims manager
Large or complicated claims require more investigation. In this case, the insurer will assign you a personal claims manager, who will be your personal contact and will take care of everything for you.

The role of the loss adjuster
If a claim proves difficult for the insurer to assess, a loss adjuster will be brought in to investigate the cause and extent of the damage. The insurer will pay the loss adjuster's fees. In consultation with the insurer, you can also bring in a loss assessor. He or she will then handle your claim on your behalf. The insurer will also pay the fees for your loss assessor, provided they are deemed reasonable. This means that the damage must be proportionate to the cost of bringing in your loss assessor.

Find out more about how to submit a claim .

  • Important points to consider when applying for car insurance

When applying for car insurance, it is important that you answer all questions as fully and truthfully as possible. You can only apply for car insurance online if you are logged in to Internet Banking. Please check that you are entering the correct information. You will be asked five further questions at the end of the application. The insurer will check the information you provide. This information will also be verified by the Stichting Centraal Informatiesysteem Schade (CIS). CIS records policyholder details from the insurance companies operating in the Netherlands. The insurer also passes on information about its customers to CIS.

  • Fraud

ABN AMRO works on the assumption that the information you provide is complete and accurate. You are committing fraud if you intentionally and deliberately provide incomplete and inaccurate information. ABN AMRO may decide to take certain measures depending on the outcome of any investigation. For example, you may be refused a payout or your insurance policy may be cancelled.
